1. CALLS FOR PLACEMENTS

i. Intern Applications, Conservation Corps of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Conservation Corps of Newfoundland and Labrador (CCNL) is seeking proposals for local environmental and cultural heritage conservation placements for the 2005 season. Community partners (including municipalities, development groups, youth organizations, environmental groups, zone boards, and educational institutions) are invited to apply. The deadline for proposals is July 22, 2005.

2. ACTION ALERTS

i. Mining Watch Canada & Friends of the Earth

The Parliament's Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade adopted a report asking the Government of Canada to make a clear commitment to abide by international human rights standards in regards to Canadian mining operations overseas.

A copy of the report is available on the Parliament website . Mining Watch Canada and Friends of the Earth are asking ENGOs to write to Members of Parliament to support the report. More information is available on the Mining Watch website and FOE website

ii. World Wildlife Fund ANWR Media Initiative

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is currently working on an Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) media initiative, which inlcudes a petition to stop drilling in ANWR. In addition to the petition, a commercial has been created and will be aired by various TV stations, an ad will be sent to various newspapers and press releases will be mailed out.

3. ANNOUNCEMENTS

i. Report on UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues Fourth Session Now Available

The Fourth Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues took place from 16 to 27 May 2005 at the United Nations Headquarters, NY. The special theme for this session was the ‘Millennium Development Goals and Indigenous Peoples’.

ii. ENGO Report for the 13th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 13) Now Available

The report of Leslie Adams, ENGO representative in the Canadian official delegation for the CSD 13, is now available on the RCEN website . The CSD 13 was held on April 11 - 22, 2005 in New York, NY, U.S.A.

iii. Report on Canada Wide Standards for Mercury Emissions Now Available

A new report entitled ‘Canada Wide Standards for Mercury Emissions from Coal-Fired Electric Power Generation Plants’, prepared by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) in June 2005 is now available on the RCEN website. For more information, contact the CCME.

4. EVENTS

i. Event – Canadian Environmental Network Conference 2005 and Annual General Meeting

The Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) Conference 2005 will take place this year from September 22-25 at the Centre Saint-Pierre in Montreal, Quebec. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will occur in conjunction with the conference on Friday, September 23. The voting delegates at the AGM will be the members of the National Council; other representatives of member groups are invited to attend as observers.

Online registration forms for the AGM are now available, as well as the RCEN 2004 Bylaws. The deadline for registration is September 1, 2005.

5. JOBS

i. Green Budget, Coalition Program Manager

Reporting to the Chair of the Coalition, the Program Manager will manage the coalition’s annual campaign. The Green Budget Coalition is a coalition of over 20 national environmental and conservation organizations that joined together in 1999 to work on federal budgetary initiatives. The position is located in Ottawa.

ii. David Suzuki Foundation, Research and Policy Analyst, Climate Change and Energy

The David Suzuki Foundation (DSF) is seeking a Research and Policy Analyst, who will contribute to the development of climate protection, clean energy and clean air policies. Includes writing, research and communication of specified policies, and developing briefs, reports, backgrounders and other materials; coordination of projects and publications. The position is based in Vancouver
