Press Release
Thursday, November 24, 2005 for immediate release
Parksville, British Columbia, Canada Parksville’s Community Hall was standing room only Tuesday, as concerned citizens from as far away as Cedar, Port Alberni and Deep Bay, braved extreme fog conditions to view parking lot and highway standard construction proposals for Cathedral Grove’s world-famous MacMillan Provincial Park.
With less than two weeks before the November 9 deadline date for public input, the many out-of-town people that braved the fog to attend the last of only two public meetings, were left disappointed as the public question period was abruptly cut off at 8:00 pm.
"People were left standing and waving their hands for a chance to ask a question, but again, just like the previous meeting in Port Alberni, BC Parks would take no more questions after 8:00 pm," comments Annette Tanner, Western Canada Wilderness Committee, Mid-Island spokesperson.
"At the first Parking Lot proposal presentation in Port Alberni, where there was 100 percent opposition for the BC Parks’ parking lot proposals, there were no notes taken of the public input at the meeting," continues Tanner. At the second and last public meeting in Parksville, where 3 people supported the building of more parking lots, BC Parks announced that they would be taking notes."
"Again, people asked for handouts of the information presented and addresses where they could send their comments, but the public was once again informed that all the information is online and that if they did not have a computer, they could go to the public library to view the maps and proposals online," adds Tanner in disbelief. "Again, there was no sign-in log to register attendance at either of the two meetings."
