The man who helped Maple Ridge map its vast network of streams using global positioning system technology has been hired on full-time.

Rod Stott is the district’s new environmental planner, said a District of Maple Ridge news release.

Stott and his Watermark Technologies Canada were hired by the District of Maple Ridge to use GPS to catalogue the streams in 1999.

Stott and his wife Laurie also found a way to make the global positioning system stream mapping user friendly.

By doing so, they impressed Fisheries and Oceans Canada, which endorsed the system and helped Maple Ridge win an environmental award in 2005 from the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators.

The award was given out just prior to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities convention, June 3 to 6 in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

The high-end GPS system was first used in North Vancouver, Burnaby and parts of Coquitlam.

But Maple Ridge has mapped more kilometres of streams, all told, about 450 kilometres. That data is now on CD and easy to access.

Information gathered during the GPS surveys not only includes exact stream locations, but also photographs and notes that identify the locations of fish and their habitat, man-made and natural features, culvert quality and erosion.

According to the release, Stott will be solely responsible for reviewing development proposals and consultants’ studies, recommending bylaw amendments and dealing with government and community groups.

He’s also worked with the B.C. Outdoor Recreation Council, City of Burnaby, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the municipality of Whistler.

"We are expecting to make great strides in the area of environmental management from a municipal perspective," said Charles Goddard, Maple Ridge’s manager of development and environmental services.

"There is great pressure on our community to accommodate growth while being sensitive and protective of our natural environment."

Stott’s addition will enhance the district’s abilities in the environmental arena, he said.
